My Switch to Better Beauty

My Switch to Better Beauty: Jessi's Kitchen

This post is going to be something a little different from what you usually see on here but I could not be more excited about this. Going to actually blog about something other than food (shocker) and talk about safe beauty products and my personal story with making the switch.

I was 23 when I was diagnosed with my autoimmune disease. It took me a long time to actually get diagnosed so more than likely I have had it much longer than I even know. I remember leaving the doctor’s office that day desperate and determined to get better and actually be able to fully live my life.

I am a major researcher. I don’t really do anything without asking a lot of questions and reading a ton. I took my diagnosis and read more than I probably ever have in my life because I just wanted to understand. I made some massive dietary changes because that was the logical first step and from there I began making other lifestyle changes.

Autoimmunity is very complex and really looks so different in every person. However, one common factor in every autoimmune disease is inflammation and environmental impacts. Once I realized food was not my only answer I began trying to figure out what else was causing my issues. It really came down to a complete LIFESTYLE change.

I had already changed my diet but that wasn’t enough. I had known for quite some time that I needed to switch my cosmetics and hair products. It just seemed so overwhelming to me at the time and I didn’t want to waste the beauty products I had already bought.

I tried countless “natural” and “organic” brands but just felt like I was wasting my money because none of them would really work. Eyeliner would only last an hour or two and the concealer would just rub off and it was SO frustrating. Well here is where I tell you that safer and HIGH PERFORMANCE beauty products DO exist.

Beautycounter is a multichannel, mission-driven company whose goal is to bring safer beauty products to the market and in to your homes.

At this point, the cosmetic industry is one of the most unregulated industries in America. 1938 was the last year a federal law was passed regulating the cosmetic industry. Right now it is completely legal for cosmetic companies to use toxic ingredients in their products even if those chemicals are known to cause cancer or other health issues.

Currently the U.S has only banned 30 ingredients from being used in cosmetics. The European Union has banned over 1,300 ingredients and Beautycounter now has over 1,500 ingredients they will never use. Be sure to check out their “NEVER” list. It is a great resource when buying beauty products.

Why does this matter?

The skin is the largest organ in the body. It is a common misconception that what we put on our skin doesn’t get in to our body but that is actually not true. Just think about medications like nicotine patches or even birth control. Both of these medications are effective because they are absorbed through the skin. Apart from absorption through the skin you also inhale powders, sprays and ingest products you put on your lips.

Now not ALL chemicals are bad for you because most of your body is made up of chemicals. However, TOXIC chemicals are the concern and they have a huge negative impact on our body. Some of the major concerns are

  • Neurological damage

  • Damage to Cells and Organs

  • Impairment to Important Biological Systems

  • Endocrine (hormone) Disruptors

Now you may be like me and not be someone who wears a lot of makeup but a little bit everyday adds up. On average, women use 12 different cosmetics a day and men use 6. Over the span of your lifetime that is a heavy toxic load and a lot of stressors on the body. For example, there is on average approximately 13 hormone altering chemicals found in the bodies of teenage girls and over 200 synthetic chemicals found in the blood of an umbilical cord of a newborn baby.

Beautycounter has a rigorous screening process for their ingredient selection that can be summarized in to a 5-step process.

  • Ban Intentionally

  • Screen Rigorously

  • Learn Constantly

  • Source Responsibly

  • Share Transparently

Be sure to check out this Video to learn more about their process.

From personal experience, I know that switching to safer beauty products takes time. Start where you can and order them as you are financially able. Here are some of the products that I am currently enjoying.

1. Lip Sheer

2. Cleaning Balm

3. Balancing Facial Mask

4. Nourishing Rosewater Mist

5. Charcoal Cleansing Bar

6. Balancing Face Oil

7. Rejuvenating Eye Cream

8. Tint Skin Foundation

Now I really don’t say all this to scare you in to switching your cosmetics. My goal is to EMPOWER and EDUCATE you to make decisions that are right for YOU. The reality is that you and your family deserve better and safer products which is why I am so passionate about this topic.
